Resources Victoria's geoscientists continue to deepen the understanding of the state's geology to help better target minerals, including those in high demand for renewable energy generation.
A partnership with the University of Alberta has identified the age of minerals linked to gold in several different settings from the west, central and northeast regions of the state.
The new results confirm that gold was formed during geological activity connected with faults and the formation of mountains, which started in Victoria about 440 million years ago.
It also shows that these processes, together with the formation of granite, played a role in producing gold across other parts of the state.
This new data and knowledge will help explorers focus their efforts, increasing their chances of success, including for critical minerals such as antimony.
