One Charged After Armed Robbery - Merrylands

A man will face court following an alleged armed robbery and police pursuit in Sydney's west.

About 3.30am on Sunday (15 September 2024), officers attached to Cumberland Police Area Command were patrolling around Military Road, Merrylands, when they located a silver Toyota taxi allegedy stopped on the road.

A pursuit was initiated after the vehicle failed to move as directed and left the scene.

The pursuit continued through Loftus Road, Yennora, where the pursuit was terminated due to safety concern.

A short time later, the taxi was located on Koonoona Avenue, Villawood area.

Police conducted a search and seized a knife from the vehicle.

A crime scene has been established and the vehicle was seized for forensic examination.

Initial inquiries revealed that the taxi was stolen on Terminal Place, Merrylands, a short time before police located the vehicle on Military Road.

Police spoke to the taxi driver – a 58-year-old man – and were told he was allegedly threated by an unknown man with a knife at the time of incident.

Following further inquiries, about 5.30pm yesterday (15 September 2024), police arrested a 24-year-old man at an address in Wentworth Point.

He was taken to Granville Police Station where he was charged with police pursuit – not stop- drive dangerously, aggravated robbery with offensive weapon, and take & drive conveyance without consent of owner.

He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court today (Monday 16 September 2024).
