Onsite Wastewater Management for Safer Communities

Wyndham City invites feedback on the Draft Onsite Wastewater Management Plan 2025-30, which manages onsite wastewater from septic tanks and treatment systems to protect public health, the environment, and our local waterways.

Onsite wastewater management systems need to be maintained or they can leak harmful contaminants into creeks, groundwater, and soil, causing pollution, bad odours, and potential health risks.

Under Victorian law, all councils must develop an onsite wastewater management plan to ensure these systems are properly maintained and managed, to:

  • Protect public health and the environment by improving wastewater management in un-sewered areas.
  • Identify and reduce risks associated with wastewater issues in our community.
  • Plan for the future by ensuring sustainable, long-term wastewater management solutions.
  • Provide clear guidelines for making decisions about wastewater installations and policies.

Wyndham City Mayor, Cr Mia Shaw said while the majority of homes were connected to sewerage systems there were parts of Wyndham where septic tanks and treatment systems were in place, such as some properties in Werribee South, Little River and larger allotments in Hoppers Crossing.

"Council has a statutory duty under the Environment Protection Act 2017, when regulating onsite wastewater management systems. This means that some of the key action items in our Onsite Wastewater Management Plan cannot be altered but we welcome feedback," she said.
