Open Day Showcases Global Military Cooperation

Amidst the buzzing excitement of Exercise Pitch Black, RAAF Base Darwin opened its gates to the public for a spectacular open day, offering a first-hand glimpse into the world of military aviation and cooperation.

The event, which attracted families, aviation enthusiasts and curious locals alike, provided a unique opportunity to witness over 30 aircraft from more than 20 nations, up close.

Head of Air Shows Air Commodore Micka Gray emphasised the significance of the open day in fostering community engagement and showcasing multinational military capabilities.

"We have Air Force Cadets, military working dogs, bomb demolition demonstrations and various other great activities for all ages," he said.

"With 30,000 people at the RAAF Base Darwin open day, we are pleased to see so many locals and visitors from Australia and worldwide."

Among the highlights were aircraft displays from various countries, including Japan. Sergeant Kota Iwahashi, a Japan Air Self-Defense Force Mitsubishi F-2 aircraft technician, spoke about the pride of showcasing his country's technology with the Australian community.

"It's an honour to display our aircraft here and to interact with the Australian public. It's also a great opportunity for cultural exchange," he said.

"It has been great to show off our aircraft and talk to the community, families and partner nations."

Local community members expressed their excitement at seeing multinational military aircraft up close, including Sarah Collins, a Darwin resident attending with her family.

"It's fantastic to have this event right in our backyard, to see all the different aircraft up close," she said.

"My kids are thrilled to see these planes and learn about what all the Defence Forces do."

The open day was an all-inclusive event featuring aircraft displays and various military equipment demonstrations, including performances by military bands and Security Forces military working dogs. It showcased the multifaceted capabilities of the ADF.

"This is a great community event. We appreciate the support from all the attendees and those who attended from around the world," Air Commodore Gray said.

"This open day recognises that the Australian Defence Force is a part of the community, and the community is a part of our Australian Defence Force."

Attendees marvelled at the technological prowess and gained a deeper appreciation for the coordination and cooperation among nations participating in Exercise Pitch Black.
