The Finocchiaro CLP Government acknowledges the Opening of the Legal Year 2025, with events hosted by the Law Society of the Northern Territory in Darwin last night and Alice Springs on Saturday.
"The Opening of the Legal Year is a time to reflect on the critical role our legal professionals play in upholding justice," said Attorney-General Marie-Clare Boothby.
"Legal professionals across the Territory work tirelessly under increasing pressure. We acknowledge their dedication and commitment, and we will continue to stand by them as we restore law and order."
Since forming government in August 2024, the CLP Government has been laser-focused on reducing crime, rebuilding the economy, and restoring the Northern Territory's unique lifestyle.
As part of this commitment, significant justice reforms have already been introduced to make our streets safer and strengthen the legal system with much more to come.
"Territorians were left in a crisis, and now more than ever, we must work together to ensure our justice system operates efficiently and effectively," said Ms Boothby.
"The legal profession is integral to this, and we appreciate their continued efforts."
The Government's 'Year of Action' is delivering real reform to reduce the pressure on the justice system and drive reform by:
Expanding legal services by providing much needed additional resources.Strengthening alternatives to custody to increase rehabilitation services.Streamlining court processes - Reducing backlogs and improving efficiencies.Enhancing technology - Improving efficiencies and facilitating better access between legal professionals and their clients.Ongoing legislative reform - Ensuring a focus on best practice procedure and crime reduction to keep our community safe, ensure justice for victims and rights are upheld.
"The CLP Finocchiaro Government will continue to back our justice system and legal professionals. We all want what is best for the Territory, and I'm proud to drive reform that will benefit all aspects of the justice system," said Ms Boothby.
"Legal professionals play a crucial role in making the Territory safer and ensuring Territorians rights and interests are upheld."
