Operation Whiskey Legion Swoops Into Mount Isa

The Mount Isa district will be saturated with police as the latest deployment of Operation Whiskey Legion launches today.

The major multi-level operation will deploy extra police to the Mount Isa District from August 26 to September 4 to drive down crime and take strong action against those causing harm in our communities.

Operation Whiskey Legion will see specialist police from the Highway Patrol, Crime and Intelligence Command, Dog Squad, and Crime Prevention join forces with local police to target high-risk crime in the area.

The extra police resources enable a surge in police presence at hotspot locations including shopping centres, public community events, and roads.

The community can expect to see high visibility patrols and crime prevention activities to engage with residents about their security.

Assistant Commissioner Brian Connors Connors said Operation Whiskey Legion focuses on enforcement and education.

"We will continue tackling crime from all angles to ensure the community is safe and feels safe," Assistant Commissioner Connors said.

"We've seen great results in previous deployments to Logan, Ipswich, Gold Coast, Moreton, Mackay, Brisbane, and Wide Bay."

"Since Operation Whiskey Legion began in April, a total of 3,186 people have been arrested on 8,144 charges."

Mount Isa District Officer Superintendent Tom Armitt said this deployment of will have a domestic violence and property crime focus.

"This deployment will target the most high-risk offenders in the district," Superintendent Armitt said.

"You can expect to see a high visibility police presence with plans to saturate the entire district in the coming days.

"We are unlike anywhere else the operation has been before, so this operation has been tailor made to suit the specific needs of our district."
