Optical Society Announces 2021 OSA Treasurer's Award Recipients

Staff recognized for outstanding contributions to OSA

WASHINGTON - The Optical Society (OSA) announced today that staff members Kelly Cohen, senior publisher, and Terence Rooney, senior program manager, students and early-career professionals, were selected as the recipients of the 2021 OSA Treasurer's Award.

Cohen rece ived the award "for her strong leadership, ingenuity and resourcefulness in leading many successful OSA Publishing initiatives."

Rooney was acknowledged "for providing a world-class experience to Student Chapters through his genuine energy and thoughtful innovation."

They will be recognized during the 2021 Frontiers in Optics (FiO) + Laser Science (LS) conference to be held 31 October - 04 November.

"Kelly and Terence are well respected by their colleagues and volunteer partners," said OSA CEO Elizabeth Rogan. "They have contributed to the high-quality technical content in our journals and the society's support of students and early career professionals worldwide."

During her time at OSA, Cohen has led a rapid evolution of OSA Publishing's manuscript tracking platform, transitioning from what was essentially a paper-centered system to the streamlined electronic Prism system used by OSA staff, editors, reviewers, and authors today. Her leadership, initiative, creativity, and compassion play a major role in solidifying the society as a prominent publisher of original research on optics and photonics.

Rooney's strong leadership skills and ability to collaborate across departments has greatly strengthened the student chapter program, ensuring a quality product and experience for our members. He brings a unique energy and thoughtfulness to his work, always looking for opportunities to streamline and improve processes.

Established in 2016, the OSA Treasurer's Award recognizes an OSA staff member who makes significant contributions to organizational excellence, promotes and enacts innovative solutions or exemplifies inspirational leadership. Candidates are nominated by OSA members and staff.
