Optus Speeds AI Shift with Unified Data Platform

  • Optus, Microsoft, Tech Mahindra and Databricks have partnered to implement the first unified data platform in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Optus migration to the platform has reduced core operational processing time by up to 50 per cent and data engineering pipeline development time by up to 20 per cent.
  • The platform also allows Optus to accelerate the implementation of next-generation technologies that leverage generative AI and machine learning.

Optus, Microsoft, Tech Mahindra and Databricks have partnered to implement a Unified Data Platform (UDP). The transformation is a key driver in Optus accelerated data, applications and system migration to the cloud.

The migration has enhanced data access, insights and operational efficiency for Optus. For instance, it has reduced operational processing time for core loads by 50 per cent and data engineering pipeline development time by up to 20 per cent.

Optus is thrilled to enable our people to use our data to make more insightful decisions with our completed migration to a unified data platform, said Mark Potter, Chief Information Officer at Optus. By collaborating with Microsoft, Tech Mahindra and Databricks, not only will our employees benefit from a better user experience and reduced latency, but our teams now can introduce and work across some of the most advanced, cutting-edge technology available.

Our customers will also benefit, as this step towards the cloud will allow us to create a more personalised journey at every touchpoint they have with Optus. This is another great example of Optus empowering Australias positive connections.

Optus replaced legacy, on-premise critical operational data warehouses with best-in-market cloud solutions located in Australia. This resulted in data consolidation, reduced latency, better security and governance, and the scalability needed for future projects.

Its inspiring to see Optus leading the charge in APAC with a unified data platform powered by Microsoft Azure. This partnership showcases how organisations can unlock the full potential of their data and embrace cutting-edge technologies like generative AI to deliver better experiences for customers and employees, said Sarah Carney, National Chief Technology Officer at Microsoft Australia and New Zealand. By leveraging Azures scalable infrastructure, Optus is accelerating innovation and achieving real impact across the region. Microsoft is proud to support this transformation.

The UDP also allows Optus to accelerate the implementation of next-generation technologies that leverage generative AI and machine learning. The combination of these technologies and the consolidation of customer data across all touchpoints allows Optus to provide a more personalised experience through relevant offers, faster issue resolution and tailored service recommendations.

Historically, enterprises had to rely on outdated on-premises technology and applications, which have hindered their growth and efficiency, said Harshvendra Soin, President Asia Pacific and Japan Business at Tech Mahindra. We provided Optus with crucial cloud data warehousing and artificial intelligence capabilities with quick scalability and flexibility. Our efforts will further enhance innovation, security, disaster recovery and cost efficiency, and provide business continuity opportunities for telecom enterprises.

From an employee perspective, Optus staff members now have the tools to deliver more impactful outcomes, enhancing efficiency and helping them focus on strategic tasks rather than data gathering. These tools also enable more effective collaboration, fostering innovation, improved problem-solving and a more cohesive workplace.

Congratulations to the Optus team on its successful migration to the unified data platform, built on the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform. Now, thousands of business users can access the UDP for better, faster and more secure data to make data-driven decisions, said Adam Beavis, Vice President and Country Manager for Australia and New Zealand at Databricks. This is a significant milestone in Optus data modernisation effort, and were pleased to be supporting its data and AI transformation journey. We look forward to partnering with the team on many more exciting data and AI use cases, including uplifting customer engagement with GenAI tools.

By migrating to a UDP in collaboration with Microsoft, Tech Mahindra and Databricks, Optus is positioned to deliver smarter, faster and more personalised services to customers. The company has also enabled its employees to be among the first in the APAC region to use a UDP to work more efficiently and collaboratively. This transformation will enhance both customer satisfaction and employee engagement, making Optus more competitive in an increasingly data-driven world.
