Organisations Urged to Implement Regional Safe At Home Programs

  • Expressions of interest are invited for organisations to provide Safe at Home programs in Kalgoorlie, Port Hedland and Kununurra
  • Safe at Home undertakes risk assessments, safety planning, security upgrades and provide in-home support to people experiencing family and domestic violence so that they can safely stay in their own homes

Eligible organisations can now express their interest in establishing Safe at Home programs to keep victim-survivors safe from family and domestic violence in Kalgoorlie, Port Hedland and Kununurra.

Safe at Home is designed to undertake risk assessments, safety planning, security upgrades and provide in-home support for people experiencing family and domestic violence so that they can safely stay in their own homes or a home of their choice, where it is safe to do so.

Importantly, Safe at Home helps families maintain safe and sustainable housing following family and domestic violence, ensuring continuity of access to their usual support networks such as workplaces, schools and early learning centres.

The Safe at Home program began in 2010 and now operates in eight locations in the Perth metropolitan area, Wheatbelt and the South West.

During the 16 Days in WA campaign in November last year, the Cook Government announced that the Safe at Home program would be expanded with $3.1 million funding over two years.

The initiative forms part of a $72.6 million funding package to strengthen responses to family and domestic violence in WA, which was informed by the work of the Family and Domestic Violence Taskforce.

Eligible organisations can seek more information at Tenders WA.

As stated by Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence Minister Sabine Winton:

"Family and domestic violence has a devastating impact on families, homes and communities.

"It is vital that victim-survivors who experience violence have the option to stay safe in their homes, where it is safe to do so.

"We know some people really do not want to live in a women's refuge, and sleep in a strange bed in unfamiliar surroundings.

"The expansion of the Safe at Home program to Kununurra, Hedland and Kalgoorlie will enable victim-survivors to exercise choices about where they live and remain connected to their support networks.

"I encourage eligible organisations to express their interest in delivering this important program that makes a genuine difference in the lives of victim-survivors."

As stated by Kimberley MLA Divina D'Anna:

"Safe at Home will provide victim-survivors in the Kimberley with the option of remaining safely in their own homes, rather than going to a refuge or crisis accommodation.

"The service will help complement the fantastic work already being done by organisations like Gawooleng.

"Initiatives like Safe at Home are key to ensuring victim-survivors can maintain their economic security and connection with their community."

As stated by the Kalgoorlie MLA Ali Kent:

"Victim-survivors should not be the ones having to uproot their lives when they have done nothing wrong.

"I am proud to be part of a State Government that is committed to supporting victim-survivors through initiatives such as Safe at Home in the Goldfields."

As stated by the Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel:

"The Safe at Home program will help keep victim-survivors in Hedland safe by providing a range of supports such as risk assessment, safety planning, and security upgrades.

"I am pleased that eligible organisations in Hedland will now be able to express their interest in delivering this vital program."
