- New mother and baby unit to provide specialist mental healthcare to women in the northern suburbs
- The unit is part of a raft of upgrades to Osborne Park Hospital
- The project is in the Request for Proposal stage to select a managing contractor to work with the State to design and construct the landmark $1.8 billion Women and Babies Hospital
A new mother and baby unit to support the mental health of expectant and new mothers in the northern suburbs will form part of an expanded Osborne Park Hospital (OPH).
The unit will provide specialist care for women experiencing mental health problems from late pregnancy, up until their baby is walking. Its team will include psychiatry, GP, nursing and allied healthcare, and the facility will allow babies to be admitted alongside their mothers.
The unit is part of a major expansion of women and newborn services at Osborne Park Hospital, which will provide capacity for double the number of births at the hospital.
The redevelopment will provide greater choice for women in the northern suburbs.
Upgrades to the hospital will include:
- expanded inpatient facilities for maternity, gynaecology and neonatology;
- expanded labour and birth suites;
- a mother and baby unit;
- a family birth centre;
- a high dependency unit;
- dedicated obstetrics theatres;
- upgraded support services; and
- expansion of outpatient services to support women's health and newborn services.
The project is in the Request for Proposal stage to select a managing contractor to work with the State to design and construct the $1.8 billion Women and Babies Hospital, which includes these upgrades to Osborne Park Hospital.
The project is expected to create more than 1,400 local jobs during construction and provide opportunities for local suppliers and contractors.
As stated by Premier Roger Cook:
"The landmark $1.8 billion women and babies project will deliver world-class facilities at three different locations and expand obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatal services in Western Australia.
"My Government is committed to expanding healthcare services in the communities where people live, and Osborne Park Hospital is a great example of this.
"Osborne Park Hospital is only going to get bigger and better under our plan to expand the maternity and women's health footprint in the northern suburbs.
"The upgrades to Osborne Park Hospital will provide capacity for double the number of births at the hospital and deliver a new mother and baby unit for women."
As stated by Health Minister Amber-Jade Sanderson:
"The expanded services at Osborne Park Hospital, to include a new mother and baby unit and a new Family Birth Centre, will provide comprehensive healthcare services for women in the northern suburbs.
"It will improve birth choices for women in the north and allow OPH to treat more complex maternity cases.
"We want to ensure women get the opportunity to help shape these important services which is why we are delivering the next phase of public consultation on this important project.
"I'm excited about what this project will deliver for women and families throughout the State."
As stated by Balcatta MLA David Michael:
"Women in our northern suburbs deserve the best possible healthcare and this development will provide them with more choice and expanded facilities.
"Osborne Park Hospital has been catering to local families for more than six decades, and these upgrades will ensure it continues to be a fixture in the community for generations to come."
