Picnic Bay is receiving a new architecturally designed public amenities block, replacing the more than 40-year-old structure with a modern and accessible facility.
Acting Mayor and divisional councillor, Ann-Maree Greaney said the new amenities block had been a long time coming.
"The old toilet block on Yule St has been out of action for a while so it will be terrific to get rid of the temporary demountable amenities and have this great looking structure built in its place," Cr Greaney said.
The original amenities were built in the 1980s and have served us well over the years, but they are now ready for replacement as they are no longer functional, financially sustainable, or compliant with accessibility standards.
"The new amenities have been designed to complement the beautiful surroundings of Magnetic Island, while being accessible to anyone, and we're thankful to be working with the State Government to have this project funded through the Works for Queensland program."
Member for Townsville, Adam Baillie MP said he was looking forward to seeing the project completed.
"It's just really great to see this State Government funded project getting underway, to be able to provide nice new facilities at Picnic Bay," Mr Baillie said.
"I'm looking forward to continuing to deliver more critical infrastructure projects for Magnetic Island and Townsville in the months and years to come."
Councillor Greaney said Council consulted with the Island community and received 241 submissions as part of a Have Your Say online survey, with 163 submissions in favour of upgrading the amenities in its existing location.
"We appreciate the feedback from our community, this new amenity block has been a long time coming so we thank our island residents for their patience," she said.

Works are underway and being conducted by local contractor Jackson Semler, including the removal of the old toilet block on Yule Street. The complete project including the construction of the new amenities block is expected to take four months to complete, conditions permitting.
