Outstanding Educators Earn Teaching Recognitions

Associate Professor Claudia Szabo

University of Adelaide educators Associate Professor Claudia Szabo and Associate Professor Benjamin McCann have been recognised at The Australian Awards for University Teaching 2024 for their dedication to improving student experience and learning outcomes.

Associate Professor Szabo, School of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, received the Award for Teaching Excellence and Associate Professor McCann, School of Humanities, was awarded a Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning.

"I congratulate Associate Professor Szabo and Associate Professor McCann on their well-deserved national recognition," said University of Adelaide Professor Jennie Shaw, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic).

"Associate Professor Szabo joined the University in 2011 and has demonstrated immense leadership in that time by designing and implementing an innovative and relevant industry-based undergraduate and postgraduate computer science curriculum.

"Associate Professor Szabo fosters a diverse and inclusive community of computer science practitioners by engaging in a wide range of activities at local, national, and international levels, all aimed at ensuring student success and excellent graduate outcomes, extensively applied to the needs of industry."

Associate Professor McCann was the designer of the University's new Film Studies major, now the fastest growing major in the Bachelor of Arts program.

"Associate Professor McCann has been awarded for innovative, culturally rich learning and teaching strategies that promote a sense of belonging between Film Studies students and their discipline, and also for making them job ready," said Professor Shaw.

"Associate Professor McCann's teaching offers enriching, co-curricular opportunities, provided by leveraging his industry contacts across Adelaide.

"Students are carefully inducted into creative practice through learning activities that are designed to build professional resilience, develop research skills, and feel authentically engaged and connected to what they learn."
