The Finocchiaro CLP Government continues to deliver real cost of living relief with 6,290 Territorians now enjoying the intended benefits of a free driver's licence for one year.
The free licence scheme only came into effect less than three weeks ago on 1 January.
It forms the Finocchiaro CLP Government's final cost of living initiative rolled out through the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR), which also includes a freeze on registrations fees and a new option to register light trailers for up to 3 years.
Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure, Bill Yan, said there was strong interest in the 12-month free driver's licence scheme but encouraged more eligible Territorians to take full advantage of this cost saving.
"Territorians were clear they wanted us to reduce cost of living, reduce crime, rebuild the economy and restore our iconic Territory lifestyle, and that is what we are doing," said Mr Yan.
"Over 112,000 licence holders are eligible for a free licence, and I want each of those Territorians to make sure they do not miss out.
"We continue to see strong uptake across the new trailer registrations options - 94 Territorians are saving time and money registering with a 2-year period, and 208 Territorians are saving even more time and money with 3 years."
CLP Member for Fannie Bay, Laurie Zio, said continued feedback from the community confirmed these benefits were reducing the financial burden for Territorians.
"The community continues telling me we are easing the financial burden on NT families," she said.
"Along with our free licence, our freeze on light vehicle registration fees until July 2026 will benefit around 155,000 cars, motorcycles, and trailers, providing some much-needed stability in household budgets."
The free licence is available until 30 June 2025. Territorians due to renew their licence on or before 30 June 2025 will receive a renewal notice with the cost of each renewal period reflecting the 12-month free period.
For those Territorians who are not due to renew their licence before 30 June 2025, simply apply either in person at an MVR or online using MVR Quickpay for the reissue of your existing licence with a 12-month extension to the expiry date.
If your licence requires a new photo, customers will need to visit an MVR.
