Port Fairy police have averted a tragedy waiting to happen removing a speeding drink driver from the roads in Tyrendarra East last night.
Officers first spotted the 1999 Toyota Corolla on the Princes Highway travelling 178km/h in a 100km/h zone about 8.40pm.
The sedan was intercepted by police before the 54-year-old driver returned a positive breath test.
A subsequent evidentiary breath test by the woman furnished a reading of .142.
The Portland woman's licence was immediately suspended, and her car impounded for 30 days at a cost of $1325.
It is expected the woman will be charged on summons with speed dangerous, excessive speeding and drink driving.
This impound forms part of Operation Roadwise, a Statewide road policing operation during the high-risk Christmas period.
Police are targeting impaired driving, speed, distraction and fatigue in high-risk areas throughout metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria.
