A 19 year old Smithton man will appear in court and has had his vehicle clamped after being caught travelling at more than 77kmh over the speed limit in the north-west last night.
Smithton Police detected a green Ford Falcon sedan travelling at 177 km/h in a 100km/h zone on the Bass Highway, Wiltshire, about 9.40pm last night. Police intercepted the vehicle.
The driver was a 19 year old Smithton man, who is a holder of a novice P2 licence.
The vehicle has been clamped for a period of 28 days and the man will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.
"Travelling at excess speed is one on the main contributing factors to fatal and serious crashes and a focus for Tasmania Police," said Sergeant Lee-Anne Walters.
"Speed continues to be the single biggest cause of serious casualty crashes in Tasmania with one in three crashes being speed related.
"As speed increases, so too do serious casualties. If you're driving even a few kms over the speed limit – remember Over is Over."
