PACE President Calls for Enhanced UN Co-operation

CoE/Parliamentary Assembly

PACE President Theodoros Rousopoulos has urged more effective and properly institutionalised co-operation between the United Nations and the Council of Europe during a meeting yesterday in New York with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, who is a former member of PACE.

Such co-operation would be "exceptionally important for promoting and protecting peace, democracy and human rights in Europe and the wider world," the President said.

Mr Rousopoulos is in New York to attend the annual Commission on the Status of Women (CSW68), where he also attended a side-event co-organised by PACE's Equality Committee and the Greek and Irish delegations to the UN on "Parliamentarians as Drivers for Women's Empowerment".

He is also due to meet the President of the UN General Assembly Dennis Francis and the President of the IPU Tulia Ackson.
