The lengths Australians are going to pamper their pets, appears to know no bounds.
While once we used to look sideways at those pet owners that dressed their pets in a warm coat or raincoats on rainy day, dog fashion is now valued globally at more than US $5billion and forecast to reach almost $9 billion by 2032.
And it isn't just fashion ... we have seen
- a culinary shift in what we feed our pets, with pet owners treating their pawed pals to puppichinos, doglattos and special dinner treat nights where they feast like a king.
- The launch of new perfumes and high-end grooming products specially designed for our fur babies;
- Pet cameras being installed at home, so owners can monitor and provide some virtual company to their pet while they are not at home
Our undying love for our pets is evidenced by data that shows pet owners spending more on pet supplies at the expense of categories like homewares, footwear, and electronics. The next emerging trend ...
If that is not enough, a new trend that pet owners are going barking mad about is renovating their home with their four-legged friend in mind.
With pet ownership in Australia at record highs (almost 70 per cent of households owning a pet), an increasing number of homeowners are undertaking renovations to make it more comfortable for their pawed pal, including features like purpose-built dog wash stations and the addition of underfloor heating in the dog's bedroom.
Leading Australian tile retailer, Beaumont Tiles, has noted an increasing number of customers seeking to add some creature comforts to their home and to use more pet-friendly, scratch-free flooring, easy-to-clean products (see attached Beaumont commentary).
One of the stand-out trends includes dedicated dog washes.
Victorian-based DIY Enthusiast, Cheryl Esser welcomed her Border Collie Skye into her household as a best friend for her son, though found washing her in the backyard was back breaking work.
"I just thought to myself that I wanted a spot where it could be easier for us to do it," Cheryl said.
"I didn't like the fact that it's outside in winter because it gets so cold to wash her. So, creating an indoor dog wash makes it a bit more comfortable for her and for us.
"I would definitely recommend it to anybody that has a pet… because there's a lot of maintenance and there's a lot of work in owning dog. Especially if you have a fluffy dog like ours that needs to be groomed."
