How do female creatives portray women's roles, dreams and aspirations in performance art?
A selection of artists will discuss the exploration of women's issues through theatre, and agency and responsibility in storytelling in a panel discussion at Lismore Showgrounds on Friday 27 September.
Rewilding the Stage: Agency and Responsibility in Feminine Creativity will explore female creativity in the production of NORPA's new performance, WILDSKIN.
The panel will analyse how themes of 'rewilding' were woven into the production, from choreography to set and costume design.
The discussion is chaired by Southern Cross University Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and feminist historian, Professor Mary Spongberg.
Panellists include:
- Charlotte Haywood; Set and Costume Designer, NORPA
- Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal; Movement Director and Performer, NORPA
- Heather Fairbairn; Associate Director, NORPA.
Professor Spongberg said it is critical to showcase female creativity.
"History shows that women's stories, struggles and triumphs have been underrepresented and undervalued. It is exciting to see local production companies such as NORPA featuring female-led creative pursuits," Professor Spongberg said.
"I am thrilled to chair this panel discussion with talented women and discuss this distinctive feminist collaboration."
NORPA Executive Director, Libby Lincoln, said it will be a lively, thought-provoking and fascinating discussion.
"WILDSKIN, and any of NORPA's site specific original works, spark conversations for and with our community. It's fantastic to partner with Professor Spongberg and Southern Cross University to host a platform for this dialogue to happen."
The panel conversation is held as part of NORPA's season of WILDSKIN.
WILDSKIN follows protagonist Eva who abandons the familiarity of her city life and travels to the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, where she is faced with challenges and characters that force her to step outside of her comfort zone, learn and grow. Incorporated into the production is the mystery of the Australian bush.
