Paramedic's Tips for Safe Team Cheers This Weekend

The Grand Final long weekend is a chance for Victorians to enjoy the footy, relax or hit the road, so Ambulance Victoria (AV) paramedics have reminded the community of simple steps to make it a safe weekend.

AV Director Emergency Management Justin Dunlop said no matter what code you follow, everyone can play by the same rules to stay safe and healthy throughout the long weekend.

"The big game is a great reason to bring family and friends together, and if you're enjoying a drink, please do so responsibly and stay hydrated," he said.

"If you're drinking at the game or away from home, make plans to arrange a designated driver or use public transport - and look out for your mates.

"Remember to wear sunscreen and a hat, even in overcast conditions."

AV will have Advanced Life Support (ALS) paramedics on scene at the AFL Grand Final, to provide fast emergency response at the major event.

Mr Dunlop reminded Victorians to enjoy the game from home if you feel unwell.

"If you plan on heading to a public event but are coughing and sneezing - it's best you stay home so you don't spread it to others," he said.

"No one wants to go to the match and then have to go home or receive emergency treatment because their condition worsens.

"Take advantage of Victoria's alternative care pathways, which can provide timely care for less-urgent matters."

If you feel unwell and need urgent medical care but not an emergency ambulance, consider the Victorian Virtual Emergency Department (VVED) at vved.org.au or find your nearest Urgent Care Clinic online at betterhealth.vic.gov.au/urgent-care-clinics.

There will be plenty of people enjoying some time off as well this weekend, and Mr Dunlop said if you plan on getting away, drive safely and take the time to be well prepared.

"If you're heading to rural or bushland areas to hike or camp, bring enough water and food, as well as anything else you need to stay safe such as marches, a torch and sunscreen," he said.

"Emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time, so consider learning first aid and CPR.

"Importantly, tell someone where you're going and when you plan on returning."
