Police have charged eight people with traffic related offences and issued 139 traffic infringement notices during a five day operation across the Central West and Chifley region.
Operation Spoiler is a high-visibility road policing operation targeting criminal activity, anti-social behaviour, drink-driving and road-related offences.
The operation was conducted by officers attached to Central West Police District and Chifley Police District, with assistance from officers attached to North West Traffic and Highway Patrol Command between Wednesday (18 September 2024) to Sunday (22 September 2024).
During the operation, police pro-actively patrolled over 7,300km covering the regional areas of Parkes, Bathurst, Cowra, and Orange.
The five-day operation returned the following results:
- 1083 random breath tests conducted with three tested positive
- 282 random drug tests conducted with 13 tested positive
- 139 traffic infringement notices issued including 55 speed offences detected
Some examples of dangerous driving behaviour detected during the operation include;
- About 1.50pm on Thursday (19 September 2024), police stopped a gold Toyota on Dalton Street, Orange, for random testing. The driver – a 24-year-old woman – was tested negative to the roadside breath test however, she was positive to a drug test. When officers attempted to collect oral fluid sample for further result, the woman failed to provide it. She was charged with refuse or fail to provide oral fluid sample. She was issued a court attendance notice to appear at Orang Local Court on Thursday (17 October 2024).
- About 12.30am on Thursday (19 September 2024), police stopped a white Mitsubishi on Woodward Street, Orange, for a random testing purpose. The driver – a 36-year-old man – was subject to a roadside breath test, which returned with a positive result. He was taken to Orange Police Station where breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.138. He was charged with drive with middle range PCA. He was issued a court attendance notice to appear at Liverpool Local Court on Wednesday (23 October 2024).
Superintendent Paul Glinn of Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said Operation Spoiler will continue to regularly conduct enforcement and to make sure road users feel safe from any potential risks on the road in regional areas.
