Parliament Passes Mail Screening Border Legislation

Today's postal network is fundamental to facilitating domestic and international commerce and trade, as well as the importation and exportation of goods to and from Australia, and is being driven by a growing eCommerce sector.

The Australian Postal Corporation and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2024-introduced in Parliament in March 2024-recognises this and will ensure Australia's system remains fit-for-purpose.

The Bill will improve security and clarify and improve existing regulatory arrangements so they continue to operate effectively in modern Australia.

The Bill has also future-proofed the system against emerging risks, allowing Australia Post and border agencies to adapt their practices as required, and help support people and businesses across Australia.

When fully implemented, Australia Post and border agencies can more efficiently share relevant information with other agencies and authorities to assist in the performance of their functions and duties during investigative and regulatory activities.

This will lead to more efficient processing and screening of mail at the border for businesses and consumers.

The measures in the Bill were developed in consultation with relevant stakeholders over an extended period, to ensure the measures are operationally fit-for-purpose regardless of further advancements in technology.

The Government will now work with Australia Post and border agencies to implement the Bill.
