Parliament Tables Report on Tenancy Act Review

REIWA

The long-awaited review of the Commercial Tenancy (Retail Shops) Agreements Act 1985 was officially tabled in Parliament yesterday, following extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including REIWA.

REIWA's 2022 formal submission raised multiple concerns on behalf of members, contributing to the proposed legislative changes.

The submission advocated for minimal legislative changes, emphasising the need for flexibility, market-driven solutions and protections targeted only at genuinely vulnerable businesses.

The report tabled yesterday outlines key recommendations for the future, with the Government set to begin drafting legislation to implement these changes.

REIWA is reviewing the report and its recommendations and will share more detailed insights with members in the coming weeks.

While it's unlikely there will be any legislative changes before 2025, the drafting process will involve further consultation with stakeholders, including REIWA.
