The Sydney Festival is in full swing in Parramatta with Canada's beloved Animal by Cirque Alfonse taking to the stage at Riverside Theatres this week.
The month-long international arts festival includes over 130 events across 24 days, including the much-loved Sydney Symphony Under the Stars at Parramatta Park on Saturday 18 January.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said hosting Sydney Festival events has become a much-loved summer tradition for Parramatta and this year's festival will span across more of the City's destinations, including Parramatta Town Hall.
"Parramatta is becoming the epicentre of culture and creativity and world-class events like these bring the best talent and entertainment to our City while celebrating the rich diversity and cultural vibrancy of our community," Cr Zaiter said.
"Sydney Symphony Under the Stars is a favourite for locals and visitors, so come and enjoy a free evening of orchestral highlights and see our nation's finest musicians, in the stunning setting of Parramatta Park."
The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will perform an exquisite program, featuring Egyptian Australian oud virtuoso Joseph Tawadros OAM, followed by Tchaikovsky's iconic Symphony No.5, culminating in a dazzling fireworks finale.
Riverside Theatres will be hosting a number of ticketed events alongside Animal, including BullyBully, Cowboy and the Bridal Lament, with Dance Makers Collective's All In taking stage at Parramatta Town Hall.
Sydney Festival Director Olivia Ansell said she was delighted to be continuing the festival's tradition of delivering extraordinary experiences to Parramatta audiences.
"What better way to kick off this year's Sydney Festival than with the exhilarating brilliance of Cirque Alfonse," Ms Ansell said.
"This barn storming circus direct from Quebec, has entertained audiences the world over with irresistible energy, jaw-dropping acrobatics, and a hearty dose of humour. It's a joyous celebration of creativity and community, perfect for families and audiences of all ages. We're thrilled to bring this internationally acclaimed troupe back to Sydney, where their signature blend of circus, music, and theatrical flair has previously captivated Sydney Festival audiences.
"In addition, the long-time Festival favourite Sydney Symphony Under the Stars provides the perfect opportunity to gather under the summer night sky with a picnic blanket.
"We're especially grateful for the ongoing support of the City of Parramatta, which allows Sydney Festival to continue presenting world-class performances on Western Sydney stages."
Sydney Symphony Under the Stars is presented by Sydney Festival with City of Parramatta a proud program partner along with Parramatta Park and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. The event will start at 7.30pm. Admission is free.
