Local leaders, organisations, community members and Parramatta Police Area Command will join the Rotary Club of Parramatta on a 1.1-kilometre street march next month to help raise awareness of gender-based violence.
Hundreds are expected to join the march on Wednesday 4 December which takes place during the 2024 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-based Violence campaign, an annual global movement running from 25 November until 10 December.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said there's no place for gender-based violence in our community.
"We want our City to be the safest place to live, work and play for women and families, and this must extend beyond our public spaces into homes and workplaces," Cr Zaiter said.
To support the global movement, the City of Parramatta is sharing the stories of local leaders to encourage the community to 'Invest in Her': raising awareness about the importance of financial independence for women in our community through a series of short videos.
Cr Zaiter said, as a chartered accountant he knows the important role that Council and the community can play in helping women to achieve financial independence.
"Women make up half of our City's population and about 74 per cent of women have told us that childcare responsibilities are the biggest barrier to employment," Cr Zaiter said.
"This is about helping our community understand how they can support women to build the skills and confidence to get back on their feet financially.
"It's about taking steps to ensure our daughters and future generations have access to a world of opportunity here in Parramatta when they grow up."

12-2pm: Assembly and speakers address audience at Parramatta Square
Where: Mays Hill Oval in Parramatta Park and finishes at Parramatta Square
People interested in joining the street march should wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen and remember to bring a water bottle. Registrations essential.
NSW Minister for Women Jodie Harrison will speak at a sold-out forum at PHIVE on 5 December in partnership with the Cumberland-Parramatta Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Committee, Western Sydney Community Forum and Council.
