Council is working in partnership with the Department of Transport and Planning (DTP) to improve the quality and safety of public spaces in the heart of Wattle Glen.

A Draft Wattle Glen Public Realm Framework has received in-principle support from DTP and confirms the shared commitment for the implementation of this framework.

The Wattle Glen community as part of a first round of engagement in 2021 identified:

  • That Wattle Glen's rural character and natural and environmental setting are valued as distinctive qualities of the township;
  • There is a fundamental lack of connectivity among key points within the township; and
  • Unsafe conditions exist for travel, especially for non-motorists, among key points within the township.

To address these issues, the draft framework identifies strategic initiatives. Since the arterial roads, crucial to Wattle Glen's public realm are owned by DTP, Council has worked closely with them to develop the draft framework.

The key initiatives of the draft framework provide the direction for future, more detailed concept design work that will be required to be undertaken in partnership with DTP, and will support future advocacy by Council to realise implementation and funding.

Nillumbik Mayor Ben Ramcharan said that the draft framework marks an important early step, providing strategic direction to address the Wattle Glen community's concerns about safety and connectivity and the need to retain the township's highly valued rural character.

"The draft framework addresses Wattle Glen's arterial road and rail reserves which are key components of the area's public realm and which pose the major challenges to, and opportunities for, addressing the community's concerns," Cr Ramcharan said.
