Several hundred proud community members gathered to march, listen to speeches, and create some warmth on a very chilly day, in a lively celebration of NAIDOC Week.
The festivities began with a march to Service Clubs Park, where the crowd came together to honor the contributions and culture of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
The event kicked off with a warm Welcome to Country by Uncle Fred, setting the tone for a day filled with respect and celebration. Mayor Leo Hauville also took to the stage, expressing his gratitude and admiration for the community's rich cultural heritage.
The team from Dalaigur School and Durri Aboriginal Corporation also delivered inspiring speeches, highlighting the vital roles that individuals and organizations play in making our community shine.
A poignant smoking ceremony preceded the raising of the three flags, a moment that filled everyone with pride and reflection. As the flags soared high, the crowd stood in reverence, acknowledging the history and significance behind each symbol.
With formalities concluded, it was barbecue time. The aroma of sizzling sausages and onions filled the air as families and friends mingled, shared stories, and enjoyed the feast.
NAIDOC Week is always a highlight on our community calendar, and this year was no exception. The turnout and enthusiasm were a testament to our shared commitment to honoring our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage.
