Health Minister Roger Cook today toured the upgrade of the Peel Health Campus emergency department ahead of the area opening to the public next month.
A $5 million investment has delivered a fresh new look and improved facilities which will assist with patient flow.
The expansion includes:
- a new fast-track area to improve patient triage;
- new holding bays designed for more privacy for patients awaiting inpatient admission;
- reconfiguration of the existing triage area to facilitate early senior medical review and to improve patient privacy and comfort;
- redesign of the emergency department waiting room; and
- the addition of seven beds to the short stay unit to further streamline patient flow from the emergency department.
Work on the emergency department has been carried out by WA business, Devlyn Construction.
About 100 subcontractors, including subcontractors from the Peel region, are being employed during the construction.
The expanded emergency department is part of a $10 million upgrade for Peel Health Campus. Other improvements include an expanded car park, overhauled nurse call system and increased security.
In November 2020, the McGowan Government announced a further investment of $152 million for a major redevelopment and expansion of Peel Health Campus that will end privatisation of the public hospital.
The new Peel Health Campus will be a State-run public hospital with co-use of facilities for a private hospital, on site, to ensure a range of health care options are available for the Peel-Murray region to choose from.
As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:
"These fresh new facilities will deliver a better experience for the residents in the Peel region attending the emergency department.
"This investment continues to represent the Government's commitment to the people in the Peel region to have access to essential and reliable emergency care close to home.
"This is just another example of how the McGowan Government continues to focus on providing the best healthcare options for the expanding Peel region."
As stated by Mandurah MLA David Templeman:
"The McGowan Government is committed to transforming the Peel Health Campus. These works are very important improvements to the existing emergency department.
"I'm also particularly pleased the McGowan Government will bring our hospital back into public hands and massively expand our hospital, if re-elected, with a $152 million commitment.
"People in Mandurah and the Peel region deserve a hospital expansion and it's the McGowan Government that will deliver it."
As stated by Murray-Wellington MLA Robyn Clarke:
"Residents in the region will benefit from the upgraded emergency department which will assist with patient flow and improve overall patient comfort.
"This expansion and upgrade of the emergency department ensures the Peel Health Campus is able to respond to the needs of the growing local community. I am looking forward to it being completed next month."
