Penguin Library will now be open outside of business hours and on weekends as part of a trial to provide the local community with greater accessibility.
Minister for Education, Jo Palmer, said the Open Library Access initiative allows library members to visit from 7am to 9pm daily, including on weekends.
"Our libraries are the lifeblood of our regions, and this innovative self-service model allows the community to visit the library during unstaffed hours at their convenience," Minister Palmer said.
"The initiative will make it easier for those with busy schedules, work commitments, or family responsibilities to access our fantastic library services.
"Importantly, by providing flexibility for our community members, we're supporting our commitment to lifting literacy and lifelong learning."
Liberal Member for Braddon, Roger Jaensch, said members will be able to access Wi-Fi, computers, printing facilities, and borrow and return books through the self-checkout.
"Penguin Library is a hub for the local community, and the Open Library Access trial makes the library more accessible and convenient for everyone," Mr Jaensch said.
"Staff at Penguin Library will continue to be available during regular opening hours to provide the same service you know and love.
"An important part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future is to develop stronger communities and enhance our regions."
