Penn State Climbs in NSF Research Rankings

Pennsylvania State University

Penn State has moved up two spots to No. 26 in the 2023 U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey, the most recently released rankings. The University also earned top 10 rankings in key research fields, including engineering, mathematics, statistics, sociology, demography and psychology.

The HERD Survey is a widely recognized benchmark that tracks research activity across U.S. higher education institutions, providing insight into research strength and capacity across disciplines.

"At Penn State, research is more than just discovery - it is a powerful engine for progress that transforms lives, strengthens communities, and drives innovation," said Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi. "Whether in materials science, engineering or the social sciences, our research is shaping the future and delivering real-world solutions that improve lives across Pennsylvania and beyond."

Andrew Read, Penn State senior vice president for Research, echoed the sentiment.

"Our research success is built on a strong foundation of expertise and collaboration," said Read. "These rankings reflect the depth and impact of Penn State's research community, as faculty work across disciplines to address complex societal issues."

Penn State continues to be a leader in the survey in engineering and materials-related research, ranking first in materials sciences, second in mechanical engineering, second in materials engineering and seventh in computer and information sciences. The University was also recognized for its excellence in the social sciences, ranking second in sociology, demography and population studies; and third in psychology.

"Rankings are just one measure of our research impact, but they highlight the strength of Penn State's academic community," Read said. "We remain committed to fostering discovery, supporting our researchers and advancing knowledge that benefits society."
