Penn State Harrisburg Launches Latino Research Center

Pennsylvania State University

Penn State Harrisburg announced the launch of the Pennsylvania Center for Latino Research (PaCLR), a center within the college's Institute of State and Regional Affairs (ISRA). This initiative focuses on empowering communities and driving interdisciplinary collaboration to tackle key issues across Pennsylvania.

The center will focus on supporting Hispanic and Latino communities by conducting research to inform public policy related to community development.

"Over the past two decades, Pennsylvania's Latino population has doubled, growing from 3% to over 8% while the state's overall population has remained steady. This growth is evident in cities, towns and rural areas alike," said Philip Sirinides, director of ISRA. "The Pennsylvania Center for Latino Research will be a vital hub for research, policy development and community engagement, working to enhance social well-being and advocate for policies that truly reflect the lived experiences of Pennsylvania's Latino communities."

The PaCLR leverages the college's extensive research capabilities to bring together faculty, government and industry leaders, professionals, and community leaders in supporting informed decision-making and public policy development.

The center aims to foster collaborative partnerships with community organizations, government entities and industry leaders while building research teams and leadership structures with expertise in Hispanic and Latino issues. By providing data-driven insights, PaCLR aims to inform policy and enhance public understanding, driving meaningful change for Pennsylvania's Latino communities.

"The launch of the Pennsylvania Center for Latino Research marks a significant milestone, not only for Penn State Harrisburg, but for the broader communities we serve throughout the commonwealth," said Shaunté DePaso, industry relations coordinator with the PaCLR. "I am thrilled to be part of a team committed to creating a dedicated space for research that elevates and amplifies the voices and experiences of Pennsylvania's Latino communities. This initiative reflects our shared commitment to fostering understanding, driving meaningful change and empowering the communities that continue to shape the fabric of our state."

The center will host a launch event on Feb. 24 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Gallery Lounge (Room W107), Olmsted Building at Penn State Harrisburg.
