- Special non-stop flights between Shanghai and Perth return for second year to celebrate Chinese New Year
- Seven additional services by China Eastern Airlines to run from 24 January to 7 February
- Western Australian Government has secured aviation connections to 20 global destinations since 2019
Western Australia is again celebrating Chinese New Year with seasonal non-stop flights between Shanghai and Perth.
Returning for a second year, the special service operated by China Eastern Airlines will see seven special flights run during the country's largest holiday, from today through to 7 February 2025.
Last year's seasonal service delivered more than 1,800 extra visitors to WA from China.
China is Western Australia's largest tourism market by visitor spend with 74,000 visitors from China spending $315 million in the State's economy in the year ending September 2024.
WA is also home to a large Chinese community, with more than 148,000 WA residents either from China or with Chinese heritage. China remains Australia's top trading partner.
This special Chinese New Year service connecting Shanghai to Perth adds to the 20 international routes the WA Government has secured or relaunched non-stop flights with since 2019.
Alongside the recent resumption of China Southern Airlines' seasonal service connecting Guangzhou and Perth, these connections further cement Perth's position as a growing global aviation hub and Australia's Western Gateway, as well as strengthen ties with China as a key international market.

As stated by Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti:
"It's fantastic to see Western Australia reconnected with Shanghai just in time for Chinese New Year, with this popular route returning for a second year.
"The return of this non-stop seasonal service reflects our strong ties with China, as one of our most significant tourism and trade partners.
"These flights not only strengthen WA's position as Australia's Western Gateway but also pave the way for even greater collaboration with China in the future.
"This service provides a valuable boost to WA's tourism economy, supporting local businesses and offering WA's Chinese community the opportunity to reunite with loved ones to celebrate Chinese New Year and experience the unique tourism attractions and hospitality WA is known for."
