- Major contract awarded to upgrade Scarborough Beach Road and Green Street intersection
- New dual-lane roundabout and pedestrian crossings to be constructed
- Project is an election commitment of the WA Labor Government
- Construction scheduled to commence later this year
Works to improve safety and traffic flow at a notorious Perth intersection is one step closer, with a construction contract awarded to Raubex Construction Pty Ltd.
The project will deliver major upgrades to the intersection of Scarborough Beach Road and Green Street, including the construction of a new dual-lane roundabout and pedestrian crossings.
The new roundabout and crossing will replace the existing two-stage road crossing, significantly improving congestion and safety for all road users.
A new shared path will also be constructed, improving connectivity for the high volume of path users who travel between the local business district and Glendalough train station.
For safety reasons, Birrell Street will be modified to a cul-de-sac configuration at Scarborough Beach Road.
In developing solutions for the intersection, a number of options were assessed by a panel of expert road designers, ultimately resulting in the roundabout design to address the safety issues at this busy intersection.
Service relocations are already underway and will continue through construction, which is expected to commence in November 2024.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"The award of this contract is a major step forward in improving this notorious intersection and delivering on another election commitment of our Government.
"People that use this intersection know how busy and challenging it can be, which is why we are making a significant investment to improve things for all road users.
"While the project will deliver significant benefits, there will be some disruption, so we want to thank people for their patience while the works are underway."
As stated by Perth MLA John Carey:
"The State Government has worked through an exhaustive community consultation process to ensure this intersection is made safer for motorists and pedestrians.
"The final design of the new roundabout is focused on improving road safety and reducing car accidents, from its current design."
As stated by Balcatta MLA David Michael:
"This project is yet another example of the Cook Government's commitment to making WA roads safer across metropolitan and regional areas.
"This has always been a problematic intersection for road users so a new roundabout design will make it easier to navigate, safer and reduce congestion."
