We are thrilled to announce that Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has attained its fifth Magnet® designation.
On Thursday, May 16, Paula Agosto, SVP and System Chief Nursing Officer and Aleshia Harrison, Director Shared Governance and Magnet Programs, along with several NCCS leaders and staff members, joined a call with Sharon Pappas, RN, PhD, NEA-BC, Chair of the Commission for the Magnet Program®, who shared that the Commission unanimously voted to honor us with our Fifth Magnet® designation, noting four exemplars.
The Magnet Recognition Program® was created by the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) to celebrate healthcare organizations that provide nursing excellence and share successful nursing practices and strategies. CHOP underwent a rigorous evaluation process to determine if the institution models the Magnet Model's five components: Structural Empowerment, Transformational Leadership, Exemplary Professional Practice and New Knowledge, Innovations and Improvements. This designation is an extraordinary achievement. As of May 2024, there are 48 pediatric Magnet®-designated hospitals (20.3% of pediatric hospitals). Statistics on the number of designations by pediatric facilities are not available; however, of the 604 Magnet®-designated organizations, only 62 (10%) have been designated five times.
"Striving for excellence isn't just a goal; it's our guiding principle. With gratitude for our team's unwavering dedication, we celebrate our fifth Magnet® designation as a testament to our commitment to nurse excellence and patient care. We are one of 31 esteemed pediatric hospitals and reaffirm our position among a select few dedicated to setting the highest standards in pediatric nursing and patient-centered care," said Aleshia.
CHOP applied for the fifth redesignation in June 2023 by submitting a document including our empirical outcomes regarding the Magnet Model's components. In March 2024, CHOP went through the next step of the Magnet Recognition® process, the site visit. From March 25 to March 27, Magnet Appraisers visited all of our inpatient care areas and the Moorestown, NJ Primary Care Center; Voorhees, NJ Specialty Care Center (SCC)/Ambulatory Surgical Center; King of Prussia, PA SCC and the Paoli, PA Primary Care Center. Throughout the three days appraisers interviewed leadership, frontline staff, patients and families and asked them for feedback. After the site visit, the appraisers sent their findings to the Commission Board, who determined CHOP provides quantitative and qualitative evidence of excellent patient care and outcomes.
