The Reserve Bank of New Zealand - Te Pūtea Matua welcomes the appointment of Professor Phillip Vermeulen to its governing Board. Philip will serve for a five-year term, from 10 February 2025 to 31 January 2030. He was appointed by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Minister of Finance, following Philip's participation in a public appointment process run by Te Tai Ōhanga - The Treasury.
This appointment now confirms Philip as a full member of the RBNZ Board. He was first appointed to the RBNZ Board in June last year as a 'Future Director', participating as an observer on the Board.
Philip is Professor of Economics at University of Canterbury where he teaches courses on finance and macroeconomics. His published research covers the fields of financial economics and macroeconomics. He taught at Auckland University of Technology from 2020 to 2022. He has significant experience in monetary policy and central banking with a career at the European Central Bank spanning over 20 years. Philip is also a Research Associate at the Centre for Applied Macroeconomic Analysis at Australian National University and has a Master of Arts and PhD from Stanford University.
"Philip has an outstanding combination of practical and theoretical knowledge of central banking, so I am very pleased that his appointment as a full member of the Board has been confirmed," Says RBNZ Chair Neil Quigley.
