National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is alerting the public that the iconic Pigeon House Mountain Didthul walking track in Morton National Park is closed while much needed works are completed.
High rainfall events in March 2021 and 2022 severely affected NPWS sites in the Shoalhaven area causing significant erosion and damage to walking tracks, roads, fire trails, and other infrastructure. The Pigeon House Mountain Didthul walking track was especially impacted.
Works completed in 2020 – 21 repaired a 156 m sandstone portion of the track to retain visitor access.
The next works that will see the track closed to the public, are located near the summit and will repair a heavily eroded section of the track.
These works primarily involve the replacement and repair of steps and track surfaces using hardwood sleepers, natural stone and infill surface material.
Local Aboriginal owned construction company South Coast Contracting and Hire will be completing repair works to the track.
Residents in the Shoalhaven area should be aware that helicopter operations are taking place from August 8 – 9 and intermittently thereafter as part of the project.
Due to the track's mountainous terrain, most materials taken into the site and removed will be done by helicopter. NPWS regularly relies on helicopters to transport construction materials to tracks that are difficult to access.
On Monday, August 5 a Smoking Ceremony was led by Elders from the local Aboriginal community to mark the commencement of the project. This significant cultural ritual cleanses the area, honours the spirits of the land, and seeks their blessings for the project.
Works are funded by the NSW Government Flood Recovery Program.
Barring any weather or other unforeseen issues, the Pigeon House Mountain Didthul walking track is scheduled to reopen to the public in later this year.
