The Minns Labor Government has awarded a contract for construction of the long awaited $100 million Pitt Town bypass.
Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure will build the bypass which will connect Pitt Town Road with Cattai Road and feature two new roundabouts and a bridge across Hortons Creek.
Construction work on the 950 metre bypass will start in coming months.
More than 10,000 vehicles use the existing road every day and traffic volumes in the peak are expected to increase by 40 per cent in coming years.
The new bypass will provide an alternative to driving through Pitt Town and significantly reduce the number of trucks driving through the town centre.
It will also reduce travel times, especially between Windsor and Wisemans Ferry, while improving safety and amenity for road users and the community.
These improvements to the road network will enhance flood resilience for local residents by improving traffic flow and road safety in and around Pitt Town, which will be vital if there is a need for future emergency evacuations.
Key features of the bypass include:
- Extending Pitt Town Road past Bathurst Street onto Cattai Road, east of Eldon Street
- Installing a new single lane roundabout at Eldon Street and Old Pitt Town Road
- Closing a portion of Cattai Road to maintain access to Buckingham Street
- Providing new bridge crossings of Hortons Creek
- Installing a new single lane roundabout at Pitt Town Road/Bathurst Street and Glebe Road.
The Pitt Town bypass is expected to open to traffic in late 2026.
Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison said:
"The Liberals promised to construct the Pitt Town Road Bypass for years, but failed to get the project moving.
"The Minns Labor Government has listened to the community and community advocates like the Pitt Town Progress Association and Federal Member for Macquarie Susan Templeman to bring this project to commencement.
"With the selection of the successful contractor, residents will soon be able to look forward to less congestion through the village and having a safer alternative for travel between Pitt Town and Wisemans Ferry.
"As the North West of Sydney continues to grow, it is essential that local communities have reliable infrastructure. The bypass will connect travellers going through Pitt Town and serve residents in this fast growing region."
NSW Labor's Hawkesbury spokesperson, Peter Primrose MLC said:
"A Pitt Town bypass has been talked about for more than six decades.
"It's good to see the time for talk is over and the Minns Labor Government is delivering this vital piece of infrastructure for the people of Pitt Town."
Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman said:
"I welcome the selection of a builder which is a significant milestone for the Pitt Town community and the Pitt Town Bypass project.
"Having advocated for many years alongside the Pitt Town Progress Association for the Bypass, with promises but little progress, I can say the Minns government has made a huge difference, committing and then delivering the funding needed to get this project moving."
