A new five-year plan influenced by Tasmania's strong diversity, is helping create a harmonious, inclusive, and respectful multicultural island.
Released today, the Tasmanian Government's Multicultural Action Plan is about ensuring all Tasmanians belong, contribute, and achieve.
Minister for Community Services, Roger Jaensch said the Embracing Diversity, Fostering Belonging: Tasmania's Multicultural Action Plan 2025 – 2029 is a roadmap to achieve important outcomes for the state's culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
"Our communities are becoming increasingly culturally and linguistically diverse, boasting over 121 ancestries and nearly one in ten of us speaking a language other than English at home," Minister Jaensch said.
"We have prioritised the essential services Tasmania needs to develop stronger communities. That is why we have invested $2 million in the first two years of the Multicultural Action Plan to ensure all Tasmanians feel connected and safe, can fully participate in all areas of life and, importantly, are confident they belong in our Island state."
"More than 1,000 culturally and linguistically diverse Tasmanians and services from across Tasmania informed the plan's focus.
"Three areas most important for them were identified; addressing racism in all areas of life, participating in education, employment and social lives that are culturally safe and ensuring programs and services are designed to consider their needs."
The Tasmanian Government will work with communities and service providers, and across all areas of government to deliver the outcomes.
Our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future provides an uplift in annual funding to the Multicultural Council of Tasmania to $175,000 per annum for the next two years to assist with the implementation of the Multicultural Action Plan across our communities.
