The first Lifting Literacy 3-Year Implementation Plan has been released, setting out the Tasmanian Liberal Government's ambitious reform journey to reach our goal of all Tasmanians having the literacy skills they need to participate fully in their community.
Premier Jeremy Rockliff said this Plan provides the initial road map for partner organisations that have a role to play in lifting literacy rates in Tasmania.
"Literacy skills are fundamental to Tasmanians being able to lead the lives they aspire to," Premier Rockliff said.
"This first three-year Implementation Plan addresses how the 23 priority recommendations of the Literacy Advisory Panel's Final report will be delivered.
"It sets out what schools, early childhood educators, libraries, community organisations and tertiary education and training providers can do to help lift literacy in this State.
The Plan uses an evidence-led approach to teaching children and adults to read and write.
"Our Government is doing what matters for Tasmanians by ensuring our schools give young people, whatever their background or learning challenges, the best chance to succeed," Premier Rockliff said.
"It is the first, but most important step in a 10-year reform effort.
"Importantly, work has already been underway to lift literacy as the Implementation Plan was being finalised."
By the end of 2026 all Tasmanian primary schools will have implemented structured literacy, with 25 per cent of primary schools across the State implementing structured literacy for K-2 in 2024.
Premier Rockliff thanked the education and community sectors for contributing to the Plan's development.
"Our Government is delivering this significant reform as part of our long-term plan to ensure Tasmanian children and young people develop the literacy skills they need to participate fully in their community," Premier Rockliff said.
