The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a hazard reduction burn in Murray Valley Regional Park, Gulpa precinct, adjacent to Mathoura on Thursday 1 April, weather permitting.
NPWS Area Manager Robin Mares said the 62 hectare burn aims to reduce fuel loads in the area to provide increased protection to Mathoura in case of wildfire.
"The burn is due to begin at about 10am and will only be ignited if weather conditions, including the wind direction, are suitable at the time.
"We are taking advantage of favourable conditions to conduct this strategic burn and thank neighbours for their understanding.
"Preparations for the burn have been put in place by staff over the past week and the operation is expected to be largely completed by the end of the day with patrols occurring post burn.
"People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the immediate area or stay indoors.
"There should be no impact on local traffic," Mr Mares said.
All burns across New South Wales will continue to be coordinated with the Rural Fire Service to ensure the impact on the community, including from smoke, are assessed at a regional level.
