A hidden gem on Flinders Island is the focus of a new masterplan for camping to secure the North-East River region's long-term future.
Minister for Parks and Environment, Nick Duigan, said the Tasmanian Government had committed $150,000 to the Flinders Council for the North East River Camping Masterplan as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.
"This is part of our commitment to support the island's tourism industry and protect its unique assets," Minister Duigan said.
"It will enable a management plan for this 16-hectare camping precinct, bushfire management and sustainability of the significant bird and fish breeding area."
Minister Duigan said Flinders Island has some of the most ruggedly beautiful landscapes in Tasmania – and some of the most photogenic scenery.
"Providing access to these areas for visitors is very important to ensure these places can drive our regional tourism economy on Flinders Island," Minister Duigan said.
"It is also important that we plan for future use of areas like North East River to ensure they are well cared for and remain accessible."
The North-East River Camping Area is located approximately 15 kilometres north east of Killiecrankie and around a 40 minute drive from the main centre of Whitemark.
"The area is popular for surfing and also offers a range of different fishing options and birdwatching," Minister Duigan said.
"Our Government's 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, is about ensuring that what we love most about Flinders Island, is there for future generations to enjoy."
This Government is doing what matters to Tasmanians by making these improvements to ensure Tasmania is the best place to live, work and visit.
