Bay Trail users in Melbourne's west can now take a sneak peek at what a new trail link will look like, with concept designs created for the extension between Sanctuary Lakes and Point Cook Coastal Park on Bunurong Country.
The trail link will be built as part of the Urban Parks Active Wellbeing Program, which is delivering upgrades in 21 parks across greater Melbourne.
Building this missing trail link will enable cyclists and keen runners and walkers to enjoy an uninterrupted journey between Point Gellibrand in Williamstown and Point Cook Coastal Park along the Bay Trail in western Melbourne.
The shared-use path has been designed to minimise road crossings so that users can enjoy safe and easy access along the trail to our stunning coastal parks.
The trail extension will use an elevated boardwalk-style path to protect the landscape, while environmental controls will also be put in place to ensure the Cheetham Wetlands are protected during and after construction.
We have appointed consultants GHD to undertake the detailed design of the Bay Trail link.
Point Cook Coastal Park is set to receive further improvements in 2023 as part of the Urban Parks Active Wellbeing Program, including upgrades to picnic tables and shelters, barbecues, drinking fountains, toilets, and playground equipment.
Works are expected to commence on the Bay Trail link later this year, along with upgrades at six more urban parks including repairs to the historic sea wall at Point Gellibrand Coastal Heritage Park.
The Urban Parks Active Wellbeing Program is delivering $21 million of upgrades at 21 parks across Melbourne to enhance the visitor experience and provide more opportunities for communities to connect with nature, get active and socialise with friends and family in our open green spaces.
Early works for the program have been delivered at Braeside, Cardinia Reservoir and Greenvale Reservoir Parks, while new picnic tables have arrived at 17 parks.
Point Cook Coastal Park offers visitors a great family day out. It is a perfect place for an easy stroll or a picnic with family and friends, it provides many opportunities to see unique birdlife and offers 360-degree views of coastal surroundings and Cheetham Wetlands.
