Northern Territory Police are investigating an attempted damage to police vehicle in Alice Springs over the weekend.
At about 3:27am on Saturday, an incident occurred outside the Alice Springs Police Station on Parsons Street involving a marked police vehicle and a stolen maroon Holden Commodore. The police vehicle, which was parked at the time, became the target of an attack involving a baseball bat and thrown projectiles.
The stolen vehicle pulled up alongside the police vehicle when a person exited, armed with a baseball bat, and struck the front passenger window, causing it to shatter. Simultaneously, other individuals in the stolen vehicle threw projectiles, shattering the rear passenger window. The offender then re-entered the stolen vehicle and drove away. Fortunately, no police officers were injured, as the marked police vehicle was stationary with no officers inside or nearby.
Police were quick to respond, establishing tyre deflation devices across multiple locations to immobilise the stolen vehicles seen moving through the Alice Springs CBD and East Side. A short time later the maroon Holden Commodore was successfully immobilised on South Terrace and abandoned by the offenders, who immediately fled on foot into the Todd River.
A search of the surrounding area resulted in the arrest of one male, aged 17, while investigations into the identities and whereabouts of the remaining offenders are ongoing. The 17-year-old was charged with using a motor vehicle without consent and investigations regarding the damage to the police vehicle are ongoing.
Acting Superintendent Danny Bell praised the quick response from police.
"This incident demonstrates the dangerous and reckless behaviour of some individuals who believe they can evade the law. Thanks to the actions of our officers, we were able to bring this vehicle to a halt without injury to police or the public. Our investigations are continuing, and we will hold those responsible to account," said Mr Bell.
Police are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward.
