Police arrest two men after pursuit - Lake Illawarra

Two men have been arrested following a pursuit at Lake Illawarra today.

Just after 10.30am (Friday 15 March 2019), officers from Lake Illawarra Police District attempted to stop a stolen Volkswagen Golf on Edgeworth Avenue at Kanahooka.

The Volkswagen failed to stop, and a pursuit was initiated.

It travelled through Kanahooka and Dapto before it was terminated due to safety concerns.

About 12.30pm, the Volkswagen was found abandoned on Hooka Creek Road at Berkeley.

Two men were seen near the vehicle before fleeing into nearby bushland.

With the assistance of Polair and the Dog Unit, officers arrested a 26-year-old man in the water of Lake Illawarra and a 28-year-old man was arrested on Hooka Island.

Both men were taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where inquiries continue.

The younger man was later released pending further inquiries.
