A woman was arrested yesterday after she was allegedly caught with contraband at an Adelaide correctional facility.
On Monday 15 April 2024, Police Corrections Team, in conjunction with Department for Correctional Services, conducted a search at the Yatala Prison targeting the introduction of contraband.
A 48-year-old Mitchell Park woman was arrested after being located inside the Prison Buffer Zone in possession of a homemade taser, an ice pipe, drug scales, four grams of suspected methamphetamine, $5500 cash, prescription medication and packages containing 59 suboxone strips.
A search of her home address resulted in the further seizure of 70 suboxone strips, mobile phones, cannabis, a quantity of suspected methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia.
She was charged with introducing a prohibited item into a correctional facility, introducing a prohibited item into a buffer zone of a correctional facility, trafficking drugs and unlawful possession of the cash.
She has been bailed to appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court on 26 June.
Detective Chief Inspector Naomi Oberscheidt, Officer in Charge Offender Management Section, Public Protection Branch said the police work collaboratively with the Department for Correctional Services to prevent the introduction of any contraband into our prisons.
"We run a number of operations specifically targeting visitors who think they can bring drugs into gaols. You run a strong chance of being caught if you choose to take the risk. This seizure yesterday at Yatala Prison is indicative of our commitment to support DCS and quell the supply of contraband into prisons."
