Police Charge Assault, Traffic Offences in Darwin City

Northern Territory Police have charged a man with multiple offences after an incident in Darwin City overnight.

Around 11pm, police received a report that a 26-year-old man, in the company of two others, assaulted a man on Mitchell Street near the intersection of McLachlan Street.

The group have tried to enter a nearby licenced premises, where the 26-year-old allegedly assaulted two employees, including spitting on one employee.

The offender then fled a short distance away, before assaulting another man and stealing his white Hyundai motor vehicle. The offender then drove dangerously through Knuckey Street and back onto Mitchell Street, before fleeing the vehicle on foot. He was pursued and arrested by attending police a short time later.

Whilst being processed, the offender has allegedly attempted to spit on police multiple times, before returning a positive breath test for alcohol.

He has since been charged with:

  • 2 x Assault worker
  • 1 x Aggravated robbery
  • 1 x Driving a motor vehicle without consent
  • 1 x Enter intersection against red light
  • 1 x Drive wrong way on a one-way street
  • 1 x Drive while unlicenced
  • 1 x Drive medium range blood alcohol content
  • 2 x Assault Police
  • 1 x Disorderly behaviour

Detectives from Strike Force Trident are investigating the incident and are urging anyone with information in relation to this incident is urged to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference NTP2400131929 .
