A man has been charged over an alleged assault following a citizen's arrest in Sydney's east overnight.
About 1.20am today (Friday 20 January 2023), emergency services were called to Bunnerong Road, Matraville, following reports of an assault.
Police will allege in court that a 19-year-old woman had finished work nearby and went to enter her vehicle on Bunnerong Road, when she noticed an unknown man was sitting inside.
With assistance from nearby members of the public, the man was asked to exit the vehicle multiple times, before he allegedly assaulted the woman and a 49-year-old man.
The man attempted to flee the scene but was restrained by the members of the public until the arrival of police.
Officers from Eastern Beaches Police Area Command arrested the 44-year-old man, before he was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital.
The woman sustained minor facial injuries and did not require hospitalisation. The 49-year-old man sustained multiple head injuries and was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, before being taken to Prince of Wales Hospital in a stable condition.
Upon his release from hospital, the 44-year-old man was taken to Maroubra Police Station and charged with enter vehicle or boat without consent of owner/occupier, two counts of common assault, reckless wounding, and use offensive weapon with intent to commit indictable offence.
He was refused bail to appear at Waverley Local Court today (Friday 20 January 2023).
