A man has been charged following an alleged carjacking on the South Coast.
About 8.45pm yesterday (Tuesday 25 March 2025), emergency services were called to a carpark in Carp Street, Bega following reports of an alleged carjacking.
Officers attached to South Coast Police District responded and were told a man allegedly brandishing a screwdriver threatened an 18-year-old woman seated in her SUV, before he allegedly pulled her out of the vehicle and drove off.
As a result of enquiries, police located the vehicle on the Princes Highway and Upper Cobargo Road, Brogo. On arrival the vehicle was alight.
Rural Fire Service attended and extinguished the fire, believed to be caused by a mechanical issue.
Police located and arrested the 37-year-old male driver nearby.
He was taken to Bega Police Station and charged with assault with intent to take/drive motor vehicle, take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, shoplifting value less than or equal to $2000 and never license person drive vehicle on road.
He was refused bail to face to Bega Local today (Wednesday 26 March 2025)
Police will allege the man stole the screwdriver from a store in Carp Street, Bega shortly before the alleged carjacking.
