Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man with manslaughter following a fatal collision in Footscray earlier this week.
The 40-year-old man has also been charged with culpable driving, conduct endangering life, traffick methylamphetamine, going equipped to steal, possess proceeds of crime and various other traffic offences.
The charges follow a fatal collision between an allegedly stolen truck and a car, at the intersection of Ballarat Road and Moore Street, on Monday 6 January about 4.30am.
Detectives believe the truck was travelling west on Ballarat Road when it allegedly ran a red light and collided with a 2011 Toyota Corolla which was turning right from Ballarat Road into Moore Street.
Sadly, the male driver of the sedan, a 67-year-old from Taylors Hill, died at the scene.
The driver of the truck was arrested at the scene and was taken to hospital, at the time, under police guard.
During the police response prior to the collision, it is alleged the driver of the truck was:
• involved in a non-injury collision with another vehicle,
• continued to drive at speed,
• at times allegedly, on the wrong side of the road, and
• through several red lights.
As the collision occurred while police were responding to the incident Professional Standards Command will have oversight of the Major Collision Investigation Unit investigation.
The Deer Park man was held over to appear before Melbourne Magistrates' Court today, Friday 10 January.
