Police Charge Man After Home Invasion At Wellington

A man has been charged following an investigation into what police believe was a targeted home invasion at Wellington last October.

Officers attached to Orana Mid-Western Police District commenced an investigation after five people allegedly forced their way into a home on Arthur Street, about 5.30am on Tuesday 1 October 2024.

Police have been told the five – who were armed with weapons – assaulted the 37-year-old occupant, before stealing cash and his black Holden Commodore sedan. The vehicle was recovered later that day and was seized for forensic examination.

The man was treated for a cut to his left eyebrow after being struck; he was treated in Wellington Hospital for the injury.

Strike Force Alfafar, comprising detectives from the Orana Mid-Western Police District, was formed to investigate the incident.

Following extensive inquiries, police arrested a 19-year-old man at Wellington police station about 11.00am on Thursday 9 January 2024.

He was charged with 21 offences – possess unauthorised firearm, possess ammunition without a permit (three counts), acquire firearm subject to prohibition order (four counts), acquire ammunition subject to prohibition order (two counts), possess shortened firearm (three counts), possess loaded firearm in a public place, drive while unlicensed, drive manner dangerous, be carried in conveyance taken without consent of owner (three counts), attempted aggravated break and enter in company and aggravated break and enter in company and steal.

He was also charged with five offences of intimidation in relation to a domestic violence investigation.

The man will next appear at Dubbo Local Court on Wednesday 5 February 2025.

Inquiries under Strike Force Alfafar continue and further arrests are anticipated.
