Police Charge Man After Newtown Incident

Geelong police have charged a man with firearm and weapons offences following an incident in Newtown yesterday afternoon.

The 31-year-old man has been charged with prohibited person possess firearm, possess unregistered general category handgun, possess ammunition, possess methylamphetamine, two counts of possess a controlled weapon and unlawful assault of a woman and child under 14-years.

The charges follow several calls to Triple Zero (000) about a man armed with a baseball bat, who appeared erratic and was yelling at cars and members of the public, in Pakington Street on Wednesday 14 August about 3.40pm.

It is believed the armed man approached two primary school aged children and a woman in an allegedly threatening manner.

Responding police located and arrested the man and seized a baseball bat, quantity of ammunition, alleged methylamphetamine and what appeared to be a homemade firearm.

The Norlane man has been remanded in custody to appear before Geelong Magistrates' Court today.
